I figure it's only fair I go through the same approval process as everyone else, so I'll have my apps approved by mods. Er. Mod. There'll be a plural number eventually.
Name: Clarence "Finny" Finnin
Age: 37
Occupation: Ex-Doctor, now working in the library.
Manifestation: His is Manifest of Voice, and it gives him the ability to influence the five senses -- but only one at a time, as it takes a great deal of concentration to do so. He can create a superficial mental block that "cuts off" the sense, but this is very short-lived; he usually just uses this to blind people in a pinch so he can get away. He can also do other simple things, like create ghost sensations (prickles at worst) or make someone's vision blurry. With enough concentration, these powers could probably be very intimidating, but he prefers using them on himself to calm his nerves rather than on other people, and he lacks the mental stamina and conditioning to be a legitimate threat. So they're mostly just annoying and short-lived inconveniences.
Using this ability too much can cause his own senses to be affected, which disorients him and, if he's really stressed, vomiting, shaking, and loss of consciousness.
Personality: Finny is a timid man, often speaking in a hurried, difficult to understand fashion. If he opts to speak at all. Neurotic and rather gullible, it's quite easy to get Finny worked up. Usually, though, he does just fine with that on his own; he's a terrible hypocondriac and is constantly obsessing over his health, worrying anything could be a sign of weakening. Finny also suffers from anxiety that can, on occasion, paralyze him with fear and make him unable to function normally.
While he is rather shy, Finny is quite fond of other people; he tries to spend as much time as he can in the presence others, and is always quite desperate for approval. He has always been more of a follower than a leader, so he's very susceptible to manipulation, as trusting as he is.Those who he does manage to befriend, he will hang on to dearly and will go to great lengths to protect. His anxiety prevents this at times, but when he's able to calm himself, he will either be the most devoted companion you've ever had, or the most clingy nuiscance you will ever endure.
He's persistent, and will try his best to solve a problem or amend a short-coming in himself, even if it pushes him to his limit.
Skills: Finny is practicing meditation to cope with his anxiety, so he is able to control his breathing rather well. He still possesses the skills he had as a Doctor, and has a basic scope of knowledge in each Manifest as part of his general practitioner's training.
Equipment: Finny keeps a first aid kit in his backpack at all times, as well as a map of the city one of the cartographers sketched out for Doctors, a canteen, and a Swiss Army knife. He also keeps a secret store of 10 vials containing weaker versions of the "cure" in his apartment; they're rather like booster shots, as they will not fully cure or effectively manage Manifestations on their own, but they can slow the process of spread and diminish the Fissures a small amount. He's had them since his days as a Doctor for his rounds in Quarentine zones, and managed to squirrel a few away after he was fired. They're more for comfort than anything else, just knowing he has them if he can't make it to his Doctor right away.
Background: Clarence Finnin was rather doomed from the start to be an unimpressive man. The youngest of six, he was constantly overlooked and overshadowed by the achievements of his elder siblings. He was not terribly clever or strong, and if he had the potential to be these things, it was never fostered by his parents, siblings, or teachers. He did not grow up in a cruel home, but the affection and attention he recieved was lukewarm at best; not because his parents were unkind, they simply had many children to care for and worked constantly to be able to do so.
He came to learn the only way he really could be noticed or cared for was by attaching himself to one of his siblings. Any friends he made were friends with them first. He grew up as "Gerad's little brother" or "Anne's kid brother"; as such, his own identity was never entirely certain to him, even when he reached adulthood.
Finny was only 12 when the Fissure event happened, and it completely broke the family apart. The eldest, the one that rarely fell ill, the one in the best physical condition, was the first to go. He died in agony, his body literally breaking and shriveling to nothing. That experience deeply scarred Finny, and as such, he is very sensitive about the nature of the Fissure and what it does to people. His father took him and his sister to find safety, and his mother, out of her head with grief at the loss of her son and not ready to give up everything she'd struggled for years to build up, stayed behind with the others. She simply told his father she put her faith in God, and this was a time of judgment; she was certain that He would spare them, if they were meant to be spared. He never knew what happened to them after that, and still wonders about it to this day.
They were able to make it to a Quarentine zone, and they lived there until the "Cure" was developed. His sister, unfortunately, contracted the Fissure and died before it made it to their camp. Both her death and their brother's were probably the biggest influence on his becoming a Doctor. He had to work very hard for the first time in his life. He failed the test many times, but he kept on trying and learning more until he'd absorbed enough information to pass.
He was very dedicated to his work and to his Patient. That bond was the deepest he'd ever experienced. He never knew what it was like to be needed or liked for simply being himself, not vicariously through another person. Things went well for years, and he was very happy.
Then he Manifested. He woke up one day with a sore throat, but he figured it must've just been from the cold the night before. The pain grew until it became unbearable by lunch time; he wasn't able to breathe properly and ended up losing consciousness. When he awoke, he was given the news that would end his career as a Doctor and reduce him to mental breakdown that persisted several months. He was kept on in-patient treatment for the longest time as he learned to cope and to control his Manifestation.
It was through his counselor's suggestion that he study inner peace that he discovered Buddhism, or what he could learn about it from a few dusty old books from the library. He was intrigued by the focus on the energy of the body and its flow, and the concept of perfect inner peace. Having lived a life of tumult emotions for the longest time, it sounded very appealing. He meditates and fasts regularly, which has caused him to lose a considerable amount of weight and hasn't done much for his already measley amount of physical strength. He was given a job at the library after having spent so much time there, though he has to stay in the back when Normals are about.
He often goes out at night with his map to search for his Patient, just to know she's alive and okay. He never knew what happened to his family, and he cannot bear the thought of never knowing what became of her either.
Appearance:
Haha I spent way too much time on this you don't even know. And I still have two more to do...
ANYWAYS. Dear Finny usually keeps his Fissures completely covered by a turtleneck or a scarf. He's very self-conscious about them, and has a habit of picking at them compulsively when he's nervous. He's lanky, with a bit've a tummy. Not much to speak of in the way of muscle. About the only thing he's got for him physically is that he's a good runner; you have to be when you're living in New Lancaster and you haven't had much in the way of self-defense training.
