Alright, since Purging is a potentially major plot point, I figure I should line out what exactly it is and what's going on with it at present. I've incorporated some of Nocturne's ideas into this, and I do hope it makes sense.
Purging began as a wartime medicine 19 years ago, when the world was still in great unrest and the Cure had yet to be created. It was an effective way of staving off the Fissure long enough to push through a battle. It originally involved the displacement of energy into livestock that was too sickly to use for food. But that was not always a viable option, and it was a resource that was inevitably tapped out. When it was found humans could be used as a substitute, the practice took an even darker turn than before.
When the territory wars began to subside and the Cure was released a few years later, Purging was banned in many of the newly formed city-states. Those that had perfected the art -- engineers and doctors -- were now seen as criminals and scum. Some renounced the practice and were eventually accepted back into the fold, but most were shunned from society and were forced to turn to underground work in order to make a living.
If you have any ideas to add, please let me know here.
